Yerba Mate

* Yerba mate (Rioplatense Spanish; mate is pronounced in two syllables as ma-tae) or erva mate (Portuguese) (Ilex paraguariensis) is a species of holly (family Aquifoliaceae) native to subtropical South America in northern Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and southern Brazil and Bolivia

Yerba Mate: Mate is an grown in South America. It is used as a stimulant for weight loss and as an appetite suppressant. It is also known for increasing energy and improving digestive systems. It has been used by Native Americans since ancient times in a tea form as a daily stimulant. Its traditional uses were to aid against fatigue, nervous depression and pain.

Daniel Mowrey, Ph.D. calls Mate "An invigorator of the mind and body, a natural source of nutrition, and a health promoter." He also states that Mate is used to "boost immunity, retard aging, combat fatigue and control the appetite." Yerba Mate has the ability to increase mental alertness and acuity and to do it without any side effects resulting in more energy and vitality. Yerba Mate has become a favorite of body builders and anyone interested in the health benefits of exercise.

The metabolic effects of Mate include the ability to maintain aerobic glycolysis (breakdown of carbohydrates) during exercise. This results in burning more calories and loosing weight. It also eliminates the sensation of hunger.

Guarana: Is a South American Herb that is known for its stimulant properties.

Guarana has been used in connection with athletic performance, fatigue, weight loss and obesity. The indigenous people of the Amazon used Guarana to decrease fatigue as well as to reduce hunger. It is also know to stimulate the central nervous system and increase metabolic rate.

Mate contains xanthines, which are alkaloids in the same family as caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine, well-known stimulants also found in coffee and chocolate. Mate also contains the chemical elements Potassium, Magnesium and Manganese.

Mate products are sometimes marketed as "caffeine-free" alternatives to coffee and tea, and said to have fewer negative effects. This is often based on a claim that the primary active xanthine in mate is "mateine", said to be a stereoisomer of caffeine. However, caffeine has no stereoisomers. "Mateine" is an official synonym of caffeine in the chemical databases
Researchers at Florida International University in Miami have found that yerba mate does contain caffeine, but some people seem to tolerate a mate drink better than coffee or tea. This is expected since their chemicals other than caffeine are different

Reasons for mate's unique physiological attributes are beginning to emerge in scientific research. Studies of mate, though very limited, have shown preliminary evidence that the mate xanthine cocktail is different from other plants containing caffeine most significantly in its effects on muscle tissue, as opposed to those on the central nervous system, which are similar to those of other natural stimulants. Mate has been shown to have a relaxing effect on smooth muscle tissue, and a stimulating effect on myocardial (heart) tissue.

In-vivo and in-vitro studies are showing yerba mate to exhibit significant cancer-fighting activity. Researchers at the University of Illinois (2005) found yerba mate to be "rich in phenolic constituents" and to "inhibit oral cancer cell proliferation".

An August 11, 2005 US patent application (document #20050176777 & #20030185908 & #20020054926) cites yerba mate as a 40-50% inhibitor of MAO activity. A monoamine oxidase inhibitor is a type of antidepressant, so there is some data to suggest that yerba mate has calming effect in this regard.

Guarana
*Guarana or Guaraná (pronounced gwa-ra-'naa), Paullinia cupana (syn. P. crysan, P. sorbilis), is a shrub or small tree in the Sapindaceae family, native to Venezuela and northern Brazil. The seed of the Guaraná fruit is a central nervous system stimulant with thermogenic and diuretic properties.

Guarana has been used in connection with athletic performance, fatigue, weight loss and obesity. The indigenous people of the Amazon used Guarana to decrease fatigue as well as to reduce hunger. It is also know to stimulate the central nervous system and increase metabolic rate.

A university study in Brazil of guarana extract showed a platelet aggregation decrease of up to 37% of control values and platelet thromboxane formation from arachidonic acid of up to 78% of control values. This study may be significant to stroke and heart attack risk reduction because when platelets hyperaggregate or excess thromboxane formation occurs, an arterial blood clot can develop, resulting in a heart attack or ischemic stroke.[citation needed]

A separate 1997 study of the effects of guarana on the physical activity of rats showed an increase in memory retention and physical endurance when compared with a placebo.

Other studies have shown antioxidant, antibacterial, and fat cell reduction (when combined with Conjugated Linoleic Acid) properties in guaraná.

Guarana contains different amounts, i.e., either less or more of the stimulants theobromine and theophylline and other alkaloids, than other caffeine sources

Although side-effects of guaraná are rare, drugs.com recommends, "When considering the use of herbal supplements, consultation with a primary health care professional is advisable. Additionally, consultation with a practitioner trained in the uses of herbal/ health supplements may be beneficial, and coordination of treatment among all health care providers involved may be advantageous." Drugs.com also advises not to mix guaraná with ephedrine.

Green tea weight loss benefits - it burns fat naturally and increases metabolism
Green tea contains high concentrations of catechin polyphenols. These compounds work with other chemicals to intensify levels of fat oxidation and thermogenesis, where heat is created in the body by burning fuels such as fat.

Ginkgo biloba - Ginkogo biloba is proven to help with blood circulation in the brain while also increasing the brain metabolic rate.  This is important to reduce mental fatigue often associated with a reduction of blood sugar that is a result of extensive exercise or change in diet.  Many individuals who feel mental fatigue naturally crave sugar in many forms to try to reduce the fatigue resulting in the gain of unwanted fat.
